How to Report Fraud or Identity Theft

1. Contact your creditors or lending institutions
As soon as you discover the fraud, notify all your creditors to alert them that an account has been fraudulently opened in your name.

  • Capital One credit card customers: If you are aware of fraudulent activity on your Capital One card, please contact us at 1-800-955-7070. If you are calling from outside of the United States, please call our collect number at 804-934-2001.
  • Capital One Bank customers: Report suspicious bank activity immediately. Contact us at 1-800-655-BANK (2265).

2. Contact the credit bureaus
Get copies of your credit report from the credit bureaus listed at our Resources page to verify that no other accounts or credit lines have been opened fraudulently in your name. You may also place a fraud alert on your name and Social Security number. This alerts creditors and banks that your information was stolen and instructs them to contact you by phone to authorize any new credit.

3. File a police report
File a report with your local police or with the police department in the community where the fraud took place. Get a copy of the report for your records and in case your banks, creditors, or others request proof of the crime.

4.  Keep a record of events
Maintain a written record of what happened, what was lost, and the steps you took to report the incidents. Be sure to include dates, telephone numbers, people you talked to, and any other relevant instructions.

Our Identity Fraud Action Tracking Sheet can help you keep track of who you have contacted as you proceed through the resolution of your situation.

Capital One Fraud Investigation Process

When you call to report fraudulent activities on your account, or if an account has been fraudulently opened in your name, we initiate an investigation immediately.

As soon as you call, our fraud investigator will record the information you report and send a form for you to complete. It is critical that you complete the form as quickly as possible and return it in the postage-paid reply envelope.

Once you have called us, we will
  • Close your existing account to prevent further unauthorized charges.
  • Open a new account and transfer the entire balance, unless the account was fraudulently opened in your name.
  • Remove any fraudulent charges from your new account.
  • If your new account is a credit card or checking account, we will send you new credit card or debit card, at your request, unless the account was fraudulently opened in your name.

You can also help us process your claim quickly by doing the following
  • As soon as you receive it, complete and return the fraud form sent to you by our fraud investigator. This form is a vital part of the investigation. If we do not receive this form from you, our ability to resolve this issue is greatly reduced.
  • Destroy all credit cards, debit cards, and/or checks associated with the old account.
  • Review your next billing statement for any new fraud charges.
